Roger Monteiro
As an artist, I’m not specifically interested in Beauty, not in the greek conception of the word. Purity of form bores me. Symmetry makes me sick. Harmony does not appeal to me at all. I’m an urban spirit accustomed to the delicate relationships that emerge from chaos. My eyes are rough, they belong to asphalt and to concrete. I see poetry in the skyscraper, grace in the subway stations. My art stands for everything that’s broken, everything that’s fake, everything in this jungle fever we call home. It speaks the city language and it feeds from city codes: traffic lights, sirens, ads, typography and anarchy. Digital by nature, it is distilled from silicon, ripped off from the algorithm. It bends what should be cartesian into primary colors to make it instinct. I feel my work as a manifesto of the undesirable, graphic remains of a nightmare. But in a very particularly way, I’m a humanist. A poet of the scars. A punk playing horse polo. Deep down we have something in common, even if it's nothing. Find out and get yourself a punch.
Roger Monteiro was born in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, in the late '70s. He holds a degree in Literature, a postgraduate degree in Philosophy and Visual Arts, with a specialization in Art History and Visual Culture. Alongside a long and successful career as an art director and graphic designer, he has been more consistently dedicated to non commercial arts since 2013, researching, exploring, and applying digital media into artistic creation. He focuses on contemporary and urban themes and is heavily influenced by pop culture, rock'n'roll, punk aesthetics and the industrial processes of image production. His work has been exhibited and published in various cities in Brazil and countries such as Croatia, England, Finland, France, Georgia, Italy, Liechtenstein, Portugal, and Spain. Most recently, as a natural consequence of his engagement with the digital world, he started to study generative artificial intelligence platforms and their potential for interaction with artistic work, experimenting, thinking, and writing about the subject. He is represented in Brazil and Europe by Art100 Gallery. An eternal enthusiast of doubt, Roger Monteiro believes that every time he's one hundred percent certain about something, he is not doing his job right. Used to be a fencer for almost 25 years. He is married to the beautiful Olivia and rides an old motorcycle named Lady Luck.
Animations for Punk Is Not London, New York, Berlin and São Paulo.
Roger Monteiro's Punk Is Not series is a powerful visual manifestation of punk culture, comprising digital works that capture the rebellious essence and raw energy of the movement. Each piece in the series portrays a distinct punk female figure, set against iconic backdrops of different cities around the world, including São Paulo, New York, London, and Berlin. Punk Is Not challenges the viewer to reconsider the idea of conformity and superficial beauty. By representing punk culture through a global urban lens, Monteiro not only celebrates the diversity and universality of the movement but also highlights its ongoing relevance in the fight against oppression and the pursuit of authenticity. Each piece serves as a visual reminder of the resistance and inherent strength of punk culture, inviting the audience to reflect on the persistence of the rebellious spirit in art and everyday life. This series has been already exhibited at Art100 Gallery (Porto Alegre) and ArtLab Gallery (São Paulo). It's available at Zigwall Arts (Porto Alegre).

The parallels between the 1920s, the Roaring Twenties, and our era, both marked by the shadow of war, resonate deeply. While the 1920s witnessed the aftermath of World War I and the looming threat of another global conflict, today we grapple with the specter of nuclear war amidst ongoing conflicts. In both periods, there is a pervasive sense of disillusionment and uncertainty about the future. 1920s had the Dadaism, focused on the concept of automatism. 2020s watches the upsurge of generative artificial intelligence platforms, that would take the original Dada concept several levels up to the pinnacle of automatism, blurring the lines between human creativity and machine interpretation of the work of art. Fed up with original Dada poems, the generative AI system is provoked to engage with its own web of references and associations, generating responses that, after undergoing a series of conventional graphic processes, reflect a fusion of human and machine thought. This process not only initiates a dialogue with the AI system but also challenges arbitrary notions of authorship and creativity, bringing AI into the sacred space of art.

Bittersweet Beauties is a series that synergizes words and images, inspired by my degree in Literature. Random verses of mine are transformed into portraits of beautiful women through AI platforms. Using these verses as prompts, the machine reinterprets them as images, creating a unique fusion of literature and visual art. Later, I tattoo the women’s skin with the verses, giving them a singular identity and emotional depth. These figures, with their different attitudes and expressions, evoke the aesthetics of the Pre-Raphaelites, an artistic movement that sought idealized Beauty. Each woman in Bittersweet Beauties carries melancholy and introspection, immersed in a dreamlike universe that contrasts with the violence of poetry carved into their skin. Observing these works, I see a celebration of ephemeral Beauty and human fragility. They are simultaneously strong and vulnerable, real and ethereal. This duality, alongside the visual testimony of emotions and thoughts, makes the series captivating, inviting reflection on the beauty, sadness, and poetry within us, and revealing the magic when technology and creativity meet.
Synthetic Desires series was specially created for the Contemporary Art Salon at the Carrousel du Louvre in October 2023. Inspired by a deep conversation with an artificial intelligence about the human condition, involving the concepts of dreaming, loving, and dying, this series explores the intersection between the theoretical understanding of an emotion and its poignant humanity. Each of the three images presents an artistic representation of these conditions, using impactful visual elements to evoke the complexity and beauty of these synthetic desires. Above all, it invites viewers to reflect on what makes us human through the Cartesian lens of the machine.
